Players are able to choose two in tandem, called a mixtape, and they can switch cassettes on the fly. The songs come in two categories, those that enhance player stats, and ones that change the player's special attack. Players are able to change their character's stats through cassettes picked up from fallen enemies, which have songs on them that change what a player can do. Music is a big part of Double Dragon Neon's world: it's what characters talk about all the time, and there are plenty of individual songs that are vital to the gameplay experience. This skill is vital, because until players level up skills enough, they won't be strong enough to take a lot of damage. Doing this successfully at the moment an enemy attacks puts a player in Gambit mode, where stats are enhanced for a short time. With a pull of the left trigger and a direction, players are able to duck and roll out of harm's way. However, the major change to the controls in Double Dragon Neon is the gambit system. The standard attacks, punch, kick, and throw are available, and throw can only be used after juggling an enemy or knocking them down. Gameplay is faithful to the original Double Dragon, keeping the feel of the 80s game but updating things by making defense a major part of the game. Over the course of the game players fight through places such as alleys, a space ship and a dojo, with a 80s tongue-in-cheek aesthetic throughout. Luckily, her boyfriend Billy Lee and his brother Jimmy are here to save the day and rescue her. The game begins with a damsel in distress, Marian, getting kidnapped by Skullmageddon's gang. Taking inspiration from the first three mainline titles in the series, reimagining everything and adding to the combat yet giving it the same feel it had so many years ago, Neon is a fun title that knows not to take itself too seriously. In a year full of series celebrating their 25th Anniversaries, Double Dragon Neon is the most lighthearted of the commemorative games being released.
